The Best Intaglio Stamp - Spain
Title of the stamp (s): Architecture. Casa Batlló (Barcelona); General Features: This stamp -printed on phosphorescent, gummed, matt, chalk coated paper- is the result of the artistic technique of burin engraving. The series is made up of six stamps: two printed in intaglio and the rest in gravure using a different paper; Explanations: The Casa Batlló is a modernist style building by the architect and artist, Antonio Gaudi, built from 1904 to 1906 and made on order of textile entrepreneur, Joseph Batlló. Its facade is made up of pieces of glass and pottery mixed with arsenic stone making waves resembling nature. The building is crowned by a porcelain cross, the balconies are made of iron and the gallery columns have bone shapes. Famous people visited it like Napoleaon III in 1865, Karl Marx in 1882. This garden assures scientific activities in Botany. Title of the stamp (s): 5Th Centenary of the Birth of San Francisco de Javier; General Features: This stamp combines the intaglio and offset printing. The intaglio printing depicts an image of the saint from the painting of Elías Salaverría which is kept in the Palace of Navarre, in Pamplona. The offset printing background is a scene from a Japanese painting from the XIX century, kept in the Castle of Javier in Navarre, representing the arrival of San Francisco Javier to Kagoshima. Stamp printed on phosphorescent, gummed, chalk coated, matte paper; Explanations: Francisco Javier was born in 1506 in the castle of Javier in a well known family of Navarre. In 1537, he was ordained a priest and after he traveled as a missionary to the Portuguese Indies. Being a universal representative of the missions, he sailed off again to the Pacific islands and Japan, establishing new religious missions in 1545. Title of the stamp (s): World Dog Show 2006 in Poznań; General Features: In 2006 the World Dog Show was held in Poland for the first time, in Poznań. Owners and breeders descended on the facilities of the Poznań International Fair on 9-12 November 2006 with thousands of dogs; Explanations: To commemorate this huge event, the Polish Post issued a series of five stamps depicting Polish dog breeds: the Polish Hound, the Polish Hunting Dog, the Polish Lowland Sheepdog, the Polish Greyhound, and the Tatra Sheepdog. The Polish Hunting Dog, a breed recently recognized by the World Canine Federation (FCI), is appearing more and more often at dog shows. Title of the stamp (s): Sheng in Beijing Opera; General Features: Stamp size 30 x 40 mm Perforation 13.5 x 13 Sheet of stamps 20; Explanations: Beijing Opera is the quintessence of Chinese culture. Sheng refers to male roles. Sheng is subdivided into laosheng (middle-aged or old men), xiaosheng (young men) and wusheng (men with martial skills). The man in the stamp Mr. Gao Chong is acted by a wusheng. Title of the Stamp(s): Philately Week Special; General Features: These stamps issued to commemorate the “Philately Week” took the form of “stamps in a stamp”. The inner stamps are composed of a “5-Mun” unit stamp and a “10-Mun” unit stamp (Mun used to be Korean currency unit), two stamps that were actually issued and used among “Mun unit” series stamps, Korea's first stamps; Explanations: This special stamp was a photochromic stamp: a light-sensitive pigment which changes color when exposed to ultraviolet light is capsulated applied to the stamp printing. As e result, the letters, which normally have no color, turn red when exposed to ultraviolet-containing sunlight. Intaglio
Intaglio is also a branch of gravure printing. This is an enhancement on copper engravings (15th century). The steel graving stencils are made by hand by a skilled artist etcher. Currently, this technique is used to print banknotes and a number of stamps.
